Engineered hardwood is a real hardwood surface bonded to a cross-layered wood core — the authentic look and feel of solid wood, but far more stable against moisture and temperature swings. That stability makes it a smart choice for basements, kitchens, and rooms over concrete where solid wood struggles. Zone 4 Flooring stocks 40 engineered oak styles warehouse-direct in Hackensack NJ, from a budget 3/8″ Bruce click-lock oak ($1.99/sq ft) up to a 5/8″ McCarran plank with a 4mm wear layer ($6.45/sq ft), plus 1/2″ MSI Ladson ($4.49) and WoodHills rigid core ($3.79) — all priced by the square foot for NJ & NY delivery or same-day warehouse pickup.
What’s the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?
Engineered has a real-wood veneer over a stable layered core; solid is one piece of wood. Engineered stays flatter with humidity and comes in wider, longer planks. See the full breakdown in the engineered hardwood buying & installation guide.
Can engineered hardwood go in a basement?
Yes — over a dry concrete slab with a moisture barrier. Test the slab first, then float click-lock planks. Prefer a fully waterproof surface? Compare our LVT & vinyl flooring.
How thick should engineered hardwood be?
We stock 3/8″, 1/2″, 9/16″, and 5/8″ options with 2mm–4mm wear layers. A thicker wear layer can be screened, recoated, and lightly sanded more times over the floor’s life.
How much do I need?
Room length × width, plus 10% for cuts, rounded up to full boxes (about 25–35 sq ft per box). The guide has a calculator and an 8-step install walkthrough.
