Why engineered hardwood

The warmth of real wood. The stability of modern engineering.

01 / Real wood

Genuine wood surface

A real hardwood veneer — most often European or American oak — gives you authentic grain, natural color variation, and the option to refinish. Not a printed film.

02 / Stable

Engineered for stability

A cross-ply or HDF core resists the cupping, gapping, and swelling that plague solid hardwood — so it can go over radiant heat and into finished basements.

Good to know

Engineered hardwood, answered.

Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. Engineered hardwood is topped with a genuine sawn or sliced hardwood veneer — most often European or American oak — bonded to a stable cross-ply or HDF core. The surface you walk on and refinish is real wood, not a printed image like laminate or vinyl.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
Most can be lightly sanded and refinished at least once, and thicker wear veneers (the 4mm layers on our 1/2″ and 5/8″ lines) can typically take it more than once. Thinner veneers should be screened-and-recoated rather than fully sanded. Each product page lists the veneer thickness.
Engineered vs. solid hardwood — what's the difference?
Both have a real wood surface. Engineered's layered core makes it far more dimensionally stable: it resists the humidity swings, cupping and gapping that affect solid hardwood, and it can be installed over concrete, over radiant heat, and below grade — places solid wood can't safely go.
Can I install it in a basement or over radiant heat?
Yes — that's a key advantage of engineered hardwood. The stable core handles below-grade moisture and the temperature changes of radiant heating systems far better than solid wood. Just follow the product's acclimation and subfloor guidelines, and our team can confirm the right line for your space.
How is it installed?
Depending on the collection: floating click-lock, glue-down, or nail/staple over a wood subfloor. Wider and longer planks are often glued or floated. Not sure which method fits your subfloor? Call us at 201-300-0300 and we'll walk you through it.
How much flooring do I need?
Measure your room's length × width for square footage, then add about 10% for cuts and waste. Each product page lists the sq ft per box. Not sure? Call 201-300-0300 and we'll help you calculate it.
